In a world that seems busier by the day, 片語搭配

0:00

productivity is on the minds of many.

0:02

by the day:表示持續加深的變化

這種結構常跟在比較級或表示變化的動詞後面,例如 getting stronger by the day。

The situation is becoming more urgent ____.

by the day

be on the minds of many:許多人持續關注

To be on someone's mind 因此,on the minds of many 表示生產力是許多人反覆思考或關注的話題。

Rising food prices are ____.

But instead of downloading the latest time management app 文法

0:05

App

or forcing yourself to stay at work for hours on end, 慣用語

0:07

instead of + 動詞-ing 結構

Instead ____ the same password everywhere, use a password manager.

of using

for hours on end:漫長而連續的時間

During the power outage, the backup alarm beeped for hours ____.

how can we use science to crack open the potential of our minds?

0:10

在這個句子中,crack open the potential of our minds 表達什麼意思?

Is there a secret to being productive?

0:14

The first thing to come to terms with is that your willpower is simply not enough.

0:16

come to terms with:接受難以面對的現實

come to terms with something 本句中的 the first thing to come to terms with 意思是第一個需要接受的艱難事實,後面的 that 子句說明這個事實:只靠意志力是不夠的。在其他句子中,come to terms with 後面可以接名詞、-ing 形式,或 the fact that 加子句。

It took Mia time to ____ the move to a new city.

come to terms with

In fact,

0:20

some studies suggest that willpower is an exhaustible source that can be entirely used up.

這裡被消耗的是 willpower,因此使用了被動結構 can be entirely used up。相同的主動和被動結構也適用於其他有限資源,例如 use up the ink 或 the ink is used up。

After we printed the posters, all the blue ink had been ____.

used up

This is a concept known as ego depletion.

but studies have shown starting a project to be the biggest barrier to productivity. 文法

0:36

shown starting a project to be:show + 受詞 + to be 結構

本句裡,studies 是主詞,starting a project 是 shown 的受詞,the biggest barrier to productivity 是 to be 後面的補語。

使用正式的 show + object + to be 結構完成句子:The audit ____ the old process ____ too expensive.

showed · to be

Before starting,

there's a construct of the mind known as the Zeigarnik effect,

which compels humans to finish a task that they've already started. 文法

0:52

compels humans to finish:compel someone to do something 結構

文法結構是 compel + 人或群體 + to 不定詞:compels + humans + to finish。

The evacuation order ____ the residents ____ leave immediately.

we find that they aren't necessarily practicing more, 文法

1:07

but instead more deliberately.

1:10

aren't necessarily ... but instead ...:謹慎修正

Aren't necessarily practicing more But instead more deliberately 此處省略了重複的 practicing,也就是「but instead [practicing] more deliberately」。not necessarily X, but instead Y

Her presentation wasn't ____ longer, but ____ better organized.

1:18

they have periods of intense work followed by breaks. 文法

1:20

「They are diluting their effort」是什麼意思?

在 periods of intense work followed by breaks 中,followed by 是放在名詞片語後面的簡化被動結構。它的基本結構與 periods of intense work that are followed by breaks 相同。

The workshop starts with a demonstration, ____ guided practice.

breaking it down into sessions with planned relaxation is most effective.

名詞受詞可放在中間或後面:break the schedule down 或 break down the schedule;代名詞則必須放在動詞和小品詞之間:break it down。

The project feels overwhelming, so let's ____ into four smaller tasks.

One key component is giving yourself a deadline.

Giving yourself a deadline One key component is giving yourself a deadline 中,-ing 子句 giving yourself a deadline 用來說明這個關鍵要素具體是什麼。 可用 to + 動詞說明任務,用 by + 時間說明最終期限,例如 give yourself a deadline to finish by Friday。

To keep the task from dragging on, Mia decided to ____: she would submit it by Friday.

be much more likely to + 動詞原形表示某個條件會使某個行動發生的可能性顯著提高。 可遷移的結構是:主詞 + be + much more likely to + 動詞原形。

If you pack your bag the night before, you're ____ leave home on time.

While it may feel like ... studies show that ...

try and make:try to make 的非正式說法

try and make 是一種常見的非正式結構,其中 try and + 動詞原形通常相當於 try to + 動詞原形。

2:35

While you're at it:順便加入一項相關動作

“While you're at it”用於引出一個額外動作,這個動作與聽者正在做或已同意做的事情有關。

while you're at it

split up ... into smaller parts:拆分成更小的部分

受詞 your large tasks 指明被拆分的內容,而 into smaller bite-sized ones 描述拆分後得到的部分;ones 代替 tasks。
